The Dominican Pillars

The four Dominican Pillars are study, prayer, service (ministry), and community. These are the standards of life that Dominicans live by. St. Catherine’s High School is built upon these pillars, creating a faith-filled community where students of all faiths are able to grow in their personal spirituality.

Study
The pillar of study revolves around Veritas, a Dominican motto meaning truth. Students learn to seek truth through an outstanding educational program that encourages curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.
Examples of Study at SCHS:

  • St. Catherine's offers nine advanced/honors courses and seven advanced placement courses

  • Students support one another as peer tutors and academic mentors

  • Students have an abundance of opportunities to get academic help: after-school study programming, in-school resource, and supportive study hall teachers. Teachers are available after school for at least 30 minutes (oftentimes longer) each day to give extra help

  • Angels have a robust academic recognition program that includes honor roll and Aquinas Awards.

Prayer
The pillar of prayer is woven throughout all dimensions of school life. From formal prayers, such as morning prayer and weekly prayer services or mass, to more informal experiences, such as blessings given by their teachers, students learn that prayer is relevant in a variety of situations.
Examples of Prayer at SCHS:

  • Beginning each class with prayer is a common occurrence

  • Each day starts with Prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance

  • Weekly prayer services are student-led/driven

  • Monthly Mass celebrations revolve around the Catholic days of observance

Service (Ministry)
The pillar of ministry comes to life through community service. Throughout the year, students participate in a variety of service activities and fundraising drives to support the less fortunate. Students learn to share their gifts and talents with those around them, especially those in need, and reflect on that experience.
Examples of Ministry/Service at SCHS:

  • All St. Catherine students complete Service Hours each semester and write reflections

  • Students lead prayer services and participate in monthly mass celebrations by serving as lectors, etc.

  • Students host blood drives and contribute to sock drives, clothing drives, and food drives.

Community
The pillar of community is emphasized by our fellowship and Catholic traditions. We have over 155 years of history ...
Examples of Community at SCHS:

  • Students and staff pack the stands to cheer on the athletic teams.

  • Students volunteer to serve as Guardian Angels and Angel Ambassadors

  • SCHS provides opportunities for student-driven clubs/activities/organizations where Angels can live out their interests in community with others who share similar interests.
